PA Board of Probation & Parole (PBPP)

The Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole (PBPP)'s Mission Statement states "The Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole promotes public safety by using evidence-based practices to make equitable parole decisions that allow for respect and protection of crime victims, rehabilitation and positive change, and prevention of future crimes. The Board strives to create a just, efficient and transparent parole process that is respectful of all persons, and operates with integrity and without bias." It was established by the Parole Act of 1941 (1941, Aug. 6, P.L. 861, No. 323) and its current powers and duties are defined at 61 Pa.C.S. §§ 6101 et seq. These include the statutes listing the criteria the PBPP needs to consider when evaluating an offender for parole.

The PBPP website houses a wealth of information, forms, and brochures on the reentry process for offenders and their families:

In conjunction with its continuing legal education courses, the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI) produces many books each year covering various criminal law topics, including probation and parole. Some of these concentrate on more specific or unusual areas of the law. When a researcher has difficulty finding an answer in the manuals or form books, it is a good idea to turn to a PBI publication for guidance.
